The Mountaintop examines Martin Luther King Jr.'s last night on earth, set entirely in Room 306 of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, TN. The play is Hall's fictional reimagining of what may have happened in that motel room on the night before MLK's assassination.
On April 3, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was in Memphis, Tennessee to speak on behalf of the Memphis sanitation workers who went on strike following the death of two workers crushed by a malfunctioning garbage truck. While there, he gave his famous "Mountaintop" speech.
MLK then retired to room 306, of the Lorraine Motel where he went to rest, contemplate his mission, and began to craft his next speech in his quest to promote civil rights and join a racially-divided nation. Shortly after entering the room, Camae, a beautiful motel maid delivers a cup of coffee to King and the rest of the night is better experienced than explained.
The Mountaintop opens on Friday, May 10 at 8pm and runs for until Sunday, May 19 at 3pm. The play is directed by Jarrod Scott and stars Kyle Javon Blocker (Algonquin's Into The Woods) and MLK and Natalie Hayes-Scott (APTCo's American Son).

Trina got bitten by the acting bug at age 3, when she created and performed the “Ricky Ticky Mambo” (thanks Ricky Ricardo) for her family and friends at her family’s summer home in Long Branch, and continued to put on shows in her backyard in Jersey City throughout her childhood! Mainly working behind the scenes since high school, she has costumed over 30 productions, including Bye Bye Birdie, Little Shop of Horrors, Me and My Gal, No ,No Nanette, The Boyfriend, Leader of The Pack, Godspell and Dream Girls to name a few. She was the House Manager and volunteer coordinator for ReVision Theatre in Asbury Park. She is also a photographer and her work has been exhibited in Monmouth County, and her photos have appeared in newspapers and on television. Trina received Presidential recognition from President Bush for her video about Operation Desert Storm, and Trina created and produced, “Reflections on Ice”, an ice skating extravaganza featuring Olympic Skating champions which benefitted the Special Olympics. She has been nominated by the Rising Star Program at the Paper Mill Playhouse for her costume design for “No, No Nanette”, and by The Count Basie Theatre Basie Awards for outstanding costume design for the “Wiz’, and set design for “Always A Bridesmaid”. This is Trina’s 6th production working with the Asbury Park Theatre Company, and she is very proud to be a part of the creative production team. This particular show, The Mountaintop, has significant meaning for her, because when she was 15 years old Trina was cast in her first leading comedic role and opening night was scheduled unfortunately on April 3, 1968, the night that Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. The show was postponed and, naturally, at age 15, you don’t really realize the magnitude of what had happened. Looking back on it now, of course she realizes the significance of what had happened at that time and it brings her to tears. In her spare time she follows a band called the Mavericks, grammy award winning artists who play Cuban,, Americana, Country, Rock. Affectionately she is called the ‘Chaos Coordinator” for the Maverick fans! Trina is always looking forward to her next theatrical project and when she is not designing or hunting down props in thrift shops , she babysits for her two youngest grandchildren, Pearl 3 ½ and Parker 2. She sends love and hugs to her other 3 grandsons, Ryan, 12, Brayden 10, and Greyson , 6 who are all outstanding students and athletes! Love and kisses to her 4 her kids too! Glamma loves you more than chocolate covered pretzels!

Bob is so happy to bring professional theater back to the Jersey Shore. The founding Board President and past Artistic Director of ReVision Theater, Bob teamed up with Bill Whitefield and Board President Robert Allison to fill this huge void of theater arts in the greater Asbury Park area. Bob is a member of the Stage Director's & Choreographer's Society, Actor's Equity Association and the Screen Actor's Guild/AFTRA. He wants to thank Neil Prince, his friend for over 40 years, for his extreme creativity and talent, his tireless work and commitment to APTCo and for his love the arts. Bob also wants to thank Kipp Koenig for making our set construction happen and teaching him about carpentry. Bob wants you all to know that without all of APTCo's corporate sponsors, Board of Directors, and patrons we would not exist. Bob wants to thank his partner in "Theater Crime" Bill Whitefield for coming up with this evil plan to start a non-profit theater on the Jersey Shore and for sharing his passion for theater with us all.
Last but certainly not least, Bob wants to thank his wife, Mary Pat, his kids Toni, Bobby and Daisy (The Mini-Schnauzer) for their love and continued support.

As the world continues to reflect on the indelible mark left by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Asbury Park Theater Company (APTCo) stands out as a beacon of homage and understanding. In a poignant tribute to King's life and legacy, APTCo has dedicated their production of "The Mountaintop" to the memory of the iconic civil rights leader, emphasizing the importance of seeing King through the lens of his humanity, rather than solely as a symbol of the civil rights movement.
"The Mountaintop," a gripping play by Katori Hall, takes audiences on a journey to the eve of Dr. King's assassination, offering a fictionalized account of his final night at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. It delves into the complexities of King's character, portraying him not only as a towering figure of courage and conviction but also as a man grappling with doubt, fear, and the weight of his own mortality. By presenting King in this multidimensional light, the play invites viewers to connect with him on a deeply human level, beyond the pedestal of heroism.
In dedicating their production to Dr. King and his legacy, APTCo underscores the significance of recognizing his humanity alongside his monumental achievements. Too often, historical figures like King are mythologized, their flaws and vulnerabilities glossed over in favor of an idealized image. Yet, it is precisely through understanding their humanity that we can glean valuable insights into their courage, resilience, and capacity for change.
Dr. King himself acknowledged his humanity, famously stating, "I may not get there with you, but I want you to know tonight that we, as a people, will get to the promised land." These words, uttered in his final speech before his untimely death, resonate with a poignant truth – that King was not a flawless demigod but a mortal man driven by an unwavering commitment to justice and equality.
By honoring King's life and legacy through "The Mountaintop," APTCo encourages audiences to engage with his story in a way that transcends mere reverence. They invite us to confront the complexities of his character, wrestle with the moral dilemmas he faced, and ultimately, draw inspiration from his humanity.
The lessons of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. remain as relevant as ever. Through their poignant tribute, the Asbury Park Theater Company reminds us that to truly honor King's legacy, we must see him not only as a civil rights icon but also as a man – flawed, courageous, and profoundly human. We all need to strive to meet Dr. King on The Mountaintop and gaze at the promised land. He ran his part of the race and did what he could do. Now it's your turn. The baton passes on...

With the slogan, "I am a man," workers in Memphis sought financial justice in a strike that fatefully became Martin Luther King Jr.'s final cause.
At 6:05 P.M. on Thursday, 4 April 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was shot dead while standing on a balcony outside his second-floor room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. Read the findings of the King assassination here.
APTCo is lucky to have 5 time Emmy Award Nominee Neil Prince (Supervising Art Director (ret.), for TV's Marvelous Mrs. Maisel). Here's just a sample what Neil has done for us! Notice the original stage was extended to bring you closer to the action!
The last words of Dr. Martin Luther King were consistent with the belief that King knew that he would die at the hands of those who hated him and his vision of equality. King stepped onto the catwalk of the Lorraine Hotel room 306 to speak with Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) colleagues standing in the parking area below. He was scheduled to speak at a fundraising dinner that evening. As he stepped onto the catwalk, King turned to Ben Branch, a musician that was playing at the fundraiser and said, "Play Take My Hand, Precious Lord in the meeting tonight. Play it real pretty." A single shot from an assassin's 30-06 rifle then struck King, killing him instantly. Those were King's last words.
"Take My Hand, Precious Lord" (a.k.a. "Precious Lord, Take My Hand") is a gospel song. The lyrics were written by Thomas A. Dorsey, who also adapted the melody.
The melody is credited to Dorsey, drawn extensively from the 1844 hymn tune, "Maitland". "Maitland" is often attributed to American composer George N. Allen (1812–1877), but the earliest known source (Plymouth Collection, 1855) shows that Allen was the author/adapter of the text "Must Jesus bear the cross alone," not the composer of the tune, and the tune itself was printed without attribution for many years. "Maitland" is also sometimes attributed to The Oberlin Social and Sabbath School Hymn Book, which Allen edited, but this collection does not contain music. This tune originally appeared in hymnals and tune books as "Cross and Crown"; the name "Maitland" appears as early as 1868. Dorsey said that he had heard Blind Connie Williams sing his version of this song with "Precious Lord" and used it as inspiration. Dorsey wrote "Precious Lord" in response to his inconsolable bereavement at the deaths of both his wife, Nettie Harper, in childbirth, and their infant son, in August 1932. (Mr. Dorsey can be seen telling this story in the 1982 gospel music documentary Say Amen, Somebody.) The earliest known recording was made on February 16, 1937, by the Heavenly Gospel Singers (Bluebird B6846). "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" was first published in 1938. "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" is published in more than 40 languages.
It was Martin Luther King Jr.'s favorite song, and he often invited gospel singer Mahalia Jackson to sing it at civil rights rallies to inspire crowds; Mahalia sang the song at his funeral in April 1968. Opera singer Leontyne Price sang it at the state funeral of President Lyndon B. Johnson in January 1973, and Aretha Franklin sang it at Mahalia Jackson's funeral in 1972. It was sung by Nina Simone at the Westbury Music Fair on April 7, 1968, three days after King's assassination. That evening was dedicated to him and recorded on the album 'Nuff Said!. It was also performed by Ledisi in the movie and soundtrack for Selma in which Ledisi portrays Mahalia Jackson. It was also performed by Beyoncé at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards on February 8, 2015.
Precious Lord, take my hand
Lead me on, let me stand
I'm tired, I'm weak, I'm lorn
Through the storm, through the night
Lead me on to the light
Take my hand, precious Lord
Lead me home
In my way grows drear
Precious Lord, linger near
When my life is almost gone
Hear my cry, hear my call
Hold my hand, lest I fall
Take my hand precious Lord
Lead me home
When the darkness appears
And the night draws near
And the day is past and gone
At the river, I stand
Guide my feet, hold my hand
Take my hand precious Lord
Lead me home
Precious Lord, take my hand
Lead me on, let me stand
I'm tired, I'm weak, I'm lorn
Through the storm, through the night
Lead me on to the light
Take my hand precious Lord
Lead me home (lead me home)

When Toast first opened the doors of its Montclair, NJ location in May of 2007, the mantra was simple: “Peace, Love & Pancakes.” While Toast has since expanded — opening locations in Downtown Asbury Park, Red Bank and Cranford — the restaurant’s foundation remains the same. Toast’s mantra isn’t just a cute catch phrase that looks good on t-shirts. Those three words are the (not-so-secret) ingredients that make every dining experience at Toast stand out.
Toast’s vibrant, affable staff members greet every customer with a smile. Amy Russo, Toast’s founder, can often be found weaving between tables and laughing with customers. With bright and campy decor covering the walls and tables, Toast provides a peaceful and homey environment, making it the perfect spot for family outings, business meetings and private events.
In 2022, Amy Russo and Adam Torine joined forces with plans to grow Toast and further establish itself as a community hub throughout towns across New Jersey and spread the superior hospitality and delicious food that Toast is known for. With such a diverse offering of food and drinks, Toast has something for everyone which makes it the perfect place to gather with family and friends.
